Newspapers? [Mar. 21st, 2010|11:22 am]
Honolulu and Hawaii

I was wondering if you can buy the New York Times in Hawaii (Oahu specifically)? Is it distributed there? I'm guessing it would be. Or can you only buy local newspapers? Thanks

I forgot all about Lj [Mar. 1st, 2010|05:43 am]
Honolulu and Hawaii

I've been here almost 2 years. Made some cool friends, HAD a few jobs, and now bc of the military my friends are sadly moving away.
Looking to meet new people, I don't have kids, or pets, I'm 26, and my husband is currently deployed.
I am currently seeking employment, bc the job market sucks everywhere esp in Hawaii. I was told over 4 thousand people just on this island are looking for jobs. Plus, everytime I DO get an interview, I am told "I have 15 others to interview after you", doesn't help my search at all.
So, I'm just here looking to meet new friends, and if the place you currently work at, is seeking part time employees, please let me know.

MUCH Mahalo!

An update + Aloha Tower restaurant [Feb. 27th, 2010|02:01 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

[mood |cheerfulcheerful]

I posted just before. My dad did indeed get the job and we are arriving in Hawaii just before the Fourth of July. I'm very excited. My dad was telling me that there is a place he thinks was in Aloha Tower where you do your own barbecue. Basically, you buy the meat there and then you go and make your own barbecue and it overlooks the water. Does anybody know the name of it? Is it in Aloha Tower? We hope to go there soon after we arrive. Thanks.

Introductory Post [Feb. 2nd, 2010|06:11 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

[mood |curiouscurious]

Hello everyone!   My name is Christine, and I've been living in Honolulu for almost four months now, and was lucky enough to start a really cool job with Expedia only a month after arriving.  But my job is so busy that often, on my days off, I just don't know anything or anyone to hang out with.  I don't have a lot of free time or money to spend in the hot spots like clubs or bars, and honestly, it's just not my style.

I was wondering, does anyone know of a book club or a writing club that meets in the evenings?  And if no one knows any, would anyone be interested in getting one started?  I'm a long-time creative writer (written a novel and numerous shorts, nothing published yet) and would like to meet some other people in the area for maybe once-weekly writing sessions.  As to books, I love the classics, world literature, and fantasy, although I'm willing to read just about anything.  Reading and then talking about books is one of my favorite things in the world!

Anyway, here's hoping some of you out there are interested!  You can either reply here or email me at grecian.violet@gmail.com

Dad might be posted to Oahu [Jan. 28th, 2010|01:18 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

[mood |cheerfulcheerful]

My dad has applied for a posting to Oahu and it seems pretty likely that he will get it. We should find out in the next couple of weeks or so. We are from Australia and are in Australia currently. The guy that my dad would be replacing lives in Kailua and dad thinks we would probably live there too. I have three questions about Kailua/Oahu that I hope someone could answer for me.

1) Do the trade winds and sea breeze help significantly with the humidity in Kailua? My mum is not a fan of hot humidity and where we live here has a dry heat so you don't feel as sticky.
2) Is Kailua a generally safe area?
3) How reliable is the bus service?

Thanks heaps in advance :)

Fireworks last night? [Dec. 13th, 2009|10:38 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

Does anyone have any idea what was going on with that massive fireworks display over towards Ala Moana at 5am this morning? I could see and hear it clearly all the way in Manoa Valley.

(no subject) [Oct. 26th, 2009|11:30 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

I'm currently planning a trip to Waikiki for January 7-12th for my boyfriend and I. I had some questions that I wanted a more personalized answer on rather than just googling. If you all could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

What is the weather like? I know that it'll be the coolest out of all the months, but will I still get the "Hawaiian experience" so to speak? This is my first time to Hawaii ever so I really want to be able to do the typical cliche Hawaiian vacation activities like lay out on the beach, go snorkeling, etc. I'd also like to hike Diamond Head. Would the weather permit this or will it be too cold? I read somewhere it might be unsafe to hike Diamond Head.

Also do you guys have any "hidden gem" suggestions? I'm talking like great little hole in the wall restaurants that only the locals know about or places for live music, or cheap drink specials. It's also my bf's birthday the Saturday we are there so anything fun we could do to celebrate. Any and all suggestions about anything that you think a first timer would like to know really.

Thank you so much you guys!

What not to wear [Aug. 7th, 2009|10:41 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

Ahhh my move is on Tuesday and now it's down to crunch time @_@

As I'm packing I have one question that keeps coming up as I'm going through clothes-- is there anything I should NOT bring in terms of clothing? I've been in NYC for years so I have a lot of awesome boots and fall/winter style type skirts and stuff like that, am I gonna look all out of place wearing stuff like that? I guess a better question could be: What's going to make me look like a tourist?

Birthday ideas [Jul. 31st, 2009|05:51 pm]
Honolulu and Hawaii

I'll be in Honolulu in a few weeks to go to UHM (transferring from another school that suuucked) and pretty soon after I get there, I'll be turning 20. I'm not going to know anyone and I won't have a car (I may have a bike by that time, maybe not) so I'm wondering what I can do to have fun all by my lonesome. The last two birthdays at my crappy school were sad and lame, so this time I'm determined to have a better time.

There aren't very many things I don't like to do-- I love outdoor sports but also shopping and stuff like that. I won't have a LOT of money to spend, I'll be living on campus, and my birthday will fall on a Friday (September 4th). Odds are that I will not have a single friend yet, so does anyone have any ideas what I could do for funsies?

Also: Anyone else going to be new at UHM? I got my housing assignment last week (I was #14 on the waitlist) for a double in Gateway House, which is like the opposite of what I wanted but whateverrr.
